Coastal Strip Urban Design Guidelines in Dammam Metropolitan Area

The Dammam Metropolitan Area, encompassing seven municipalities and the urban centers of Khobar, Dammam, and Dhahran, benefits not only from its strategic location but also from a major natural asset: its expansive coastal strip. Stretching over 380 kilometers, much of this coastline is already urbanized, with many areas developed several decades ago. Recognizing the importance of the coastline as a driver for improving urban quality of life and environmental value. SALFO was tasked with drafting and presenting eight core principles for coastal development. The resulting manual offers comprehensive design guidance for buildings, road networks, green and open spaces, and waterfront edges. It also includes supplementary guidelines on shading, fencing, public art, and sustainable environmental design—all aimed at enhancing livability, connectivity, and harmony with the natural coastal setting.
